All Dogs Go to Heaven

This post will be dedicated to Molly, our dog of 16 years, who went to Heaven on Monday. Mom and I will miss hearing the jingle of her red collar, but we have the fondest memories. We got Molly when I was in second grade. She was the shy one among the bunch and to choose her, I had to pull her from the corner she had backed into. Molly was a survivor in every sense of the word! She survived a fatal illness when she was only a puppy and 3+ hits by the UPS truck. Her medical bills far exceeded mine.

Being of beagle hound roots, she hunted everything: cats (sad, but true), ducks, squirrels, chipmunks and birds. I remember coming home from school to find a duck head from a neighbor's pond lying on our front porch. Molly was so proud. Little did she know what trouble she had caused, much less, what trouble she was in.

Molly had wonderful friends growing up, too. Santuck, Luke, Annabelle, Sunny and Molly. They were history-making dogs, I suppose. Because of them, our city passed the leash law. (A city councilor lived around the block. He was not a dog lover and a Yankee who couldn't fathom dogs rambling around the city sidewalks sans owner.) This was devastating to their little Rat Pack.

Molly was no longer able to enjoy breakfast at the Piggly Wiggly grocery store, lunch at Carlisle's drug store or dinner at Cecil's. Though she still enjoyed the chase of a duck or squirrel, Molly really loved to hunt already prepared food. Many a days, Mom and I would receive a phone call, "Hey we just saw Molly standing at Carlisle's. Do you want me to bring her home?" Occassionally I would ride my bike to the "Pig" to buy some odds and ends for Mom. I'd park my bike alongside the newspaper stands and instruct Molly to remain at the door. For the most part, she obeyed, waiting patiently at the automatic sliding glass doors until my return. However, at times impatience overcame her and she would join me in the aisles. She loved Piggly Wiggly's southern deli! Thank goodness we lived in a small town and people knew Molly.

Molly was such a sweet soul. If a dog could understand southern hospitality, she certainly did. Molly loved company! As soon as they would a car would enter the driveway, she would run to greet them and if inside, she would meet them at the door with a wagging tail. And when they left, she would escort them outside and bark to ensure safety. We will surely miss her wagging tail and her gentle nudges.

We thought it was only appropriate to have red ribbon for Molly. She looked so pretty with her red collar.

We prepared Molly's grave in our backyard.

Mom decided to plant rosemary, an herb signifying remembrance, on her grave.

Here's Mom taking water to the newly planted rosemary. She always took the best care of Molly.

Mom loves white snowballs, so we added some in honor of Molly.

Molly had anything but a dog's life. I thought I'd share a few pictures of her growing up. Okay, actually, it's a lot of pictures. I just couldn't decide which to exclude, so I did them all.

These were taken the week we got Molly. She was such a cute pup!

As I mentioned, Molly was a beagle and loved to hunt and catch. Even if it was a pinecone.

She loved howling with the train.

After the leash law became effective, she enjoyed looking out my Mom's bedroom window.

I'm not sure why my Molly plopped down beside this wooden cow. Bigger question is why my. grandmother had a wooden cow in her backyard. (Don't ask. You would have had to known her.)

Molly playing in the snow! One of Alabama's few snowstorms in the 90s.

Molly perched in one of my Mom's dining room chairs.

Molly loved being wherever we were. Here she is amidst my Mom's Christmas giftwrapping galore.

Friday's Favorites

1. Kate Spade "Jocelyn" Handbag
How patriotic! Right in time for Memorial Day and July 4th.

Why not have fun while traveling? Okay, so maybe this is a bit young-looking, but too cute to boot.

Favorite Spot

Do you have favorite spots in your home? I do. And this is one of them. It's in our hallway by the front door.

My mom always told me to have a mirror by the front door to a.) look at yourself before receiving guests and b.) look at yourself before leaving the house. I was actually with my Mom when we found the mirror alongside Commonwealth Avenue in Boston. We were removing my dorm furniture from storage and saw that someone was giving it to the garbage man. There were actually two, so one for me and one for Mom. We brought them home and painted them white. And to think, they might have ended up as landfill. We were going green, even before it was en vogue.

The table is from a friend of my Mom's and was modeled after one in Horchow. (There are actually two of those as well. The other resides in the guest bedroom.) The ball-feet and knob are absolutely adorable. This piece reminds me of the oversized, whimsical furniture in Alice in Wonderland. The lamp is vintage of course, with a floral painted design and a green and white GINGHAM shade.

It's simple, but I love walking in and seeing this area.

New Faces

We have some new faces in our home! For Christmas, my cousin gave all the girls this little card. The card is a reprint of a painting by local artist Lila Graves. It reads: "I am kind and generous with my spirit. I want good things for others. I was created for greatness. I am beautiful everyday in every way." I loved it so much that I had it framed. Her Ugly Betty look with that bright red lipstick just got me. I am so pleased with how she turned out. Isn't she just adorable in that red frame!

While we had Ugly Betty framed, the Bear also got a new look. I wish I had a before picture. His frame did not do him justice. It was an old brown plain frame that I dreaded having to hang in our house. But this, this I can do. Love your new look Bear! (For you Yankee readers, Paul "Bear" Bryant is only the best football coach in history. He led the University of Alabama to six national championships and now has a stadium and museum named in his honor. 'Round here, he's about the best thing since sliced bread.)

Happy Earth Day

In my quest to find THE 30 inch black rectangle hanging basket I once spotted at Wal-Mart and did not purchase (Note to self: from now on, do make those impulsive purchases), I have visited three lovely Wal-Marts for a total of six visits. And today, Wal-Mart had them back in stock! How appropriate, I thought, I can go home and plant my pretty white petunias in my pretty hanging basket on this pretty Earth Day.

(I have been trying to post this entry for quite a while but we were experiencing some technical difficulties a la Charter cable.) Anyway, I hope everyone had a wonderful Earth Day! Did you do anything Earth friendly? I think I did. Planting flowers counts, doesn't it?

Dear Santa

Dear Santa,
It's Elizabeth. You may not remember me- it's been quite a while. Thank you for your dedication all these years. Playing Hungry Hungry Hippos and Splat are some of my fondest memories, and let's not forget my pristine pink Barbie car.

I know it's a bit early for Christmas, but you know what they say "Early bird gets the worm." For Christmas (or earlier if you prefer to beat the rush), I would like the Mackenzie-Childs Tea Party Chandelier in the Wallcourt Style. I know it's a bit more than the pink Barbie car or Barbie house, but I promise I have been really, really good this year. I've attached a picture so you can see what it looks like. Oh, and here's the website link, just in case!

Thank you Santa!

The Big Debut

This weekend was so sunny and warm that I was finally able to debut my Lilly Pulitzer umbrella! Fab Girl Anna came up for a cookout. And, as with most of my tchotchkes, this umbrella has a little story. My Mom and I found it at TJ Maxx at a bargain price. I brought it home, to which David replied, "We already have an umbrella for the table, why do we need another?"

Such is the plight of most women. Little do our men know that we always need another! How could I reason with someone who didn't understand the rare occassion of finding a Lilly Pulitzer umbrella with a pink and white gingham trim and matching cover at TJ's for a bargain price? I had to explain to David that functionality or practicality is simply not within my mind's range. The purpose of this fabulous umbrella is its sheer decorative value.

Conclusion/Compromise: When I have my girlfriends over, I will use my umbrella. For all other purposes, we will use the umbrella included with the porch furniture.

Day at the Market

One of my favorite memories from studying abroad in France is my daily visit to the farmers market. Each morning on my way to class, I would stop by and pick up breakfast-- grape tomatoes fresh off the vine, strawberries, grapes, etc. Breakfast to go a la francais. I loved walking along the carts, looking at the vibrant colors of the fruits and vegetables. Something about the arrangement of the big blocks of color, I found utterly stimulating.

When I moved to Birmingham, I learned of its huge, daily farmers market. Today, I finally went. I am only upset I didn't go sooner. It was wonderful! Better than a shopping mall. Okay, maybe not. Anyway, one of the vendors must have thought I was weird as I just strolled up and down the tight aisles with my mouth open, eyes glazed over at all of the beautiful produce. And to top it off, they had a flea market. Um, did someone say, heaven?

Here's what I walked away with....

It wasn't two minutes after I walked into the house that I had a slice of tomato with salt and pepper. And I don't think I've ever tasted a sweeter strawberry! However, I am most excited about my white hobnail milk glass for $4.50. As my Mom would say, it's the bargain of the day!

Friday's Favorites

1. Monogram Wastebasket at The Pink Giraffe
How can you not love the ball fringe and polka dots? I'm still a 8-year old girl at heart, I know.

2. Mythic Paint found here.
A non-toxic, ultra low odor paint that doesn't harm the Earth. A win-win, or as my former boss would say, all ships rise!

3. Leopard Print Needlepoint Ballet Flats at By Paige
My mom and I are obsessed with needlepoint lately. I can just picture these peeking out underneath a pair of jeans with a white button-up. Maybe a bit autumn-ish, football season, but love them nonetheless.

Buddy, My Buddy

So, I have heard about websites such as this and I'm sure you might have as well. But, on the off chance that you have not, I will gladly pass it along :). It's Gas Buddy. This handy dandy website allows you to select your exact location to find the lowest gas prices in your neck of the woods. Enjoy and happy saving!

Dothan, Alabama - Home of THE National Peanut Festival

Little did I know on Thursday I'd be traveling to the Home of the National Peanut Festival. Who says Alabama is not cultured? On the way to our friends' home, we spotted these everywhere!

I thought they were hilarious, until I saw him:

Unfortunately, we were about six months early for the festival. Aww, shucks! We did, however, enjoy some boiled peanuts. For you non-Southern blog-ees, boiled peanuts are exactly that- boiled peanuts still in their shells. One eats them by first sucking all the salty juice out of the shell. Sometimes this calls for putting the entire shell in one's mouth. Then cracking it open with either one's hands or teeth and eating the soft peanuts. Yum.

As I mentioned my stop numero uno was the Highlands Antique Mall. It was absolutely fabulous, though a bit pricey. Still dreaming about these pieces:

Pink Milk Glass

Three Tier Table Stand

My pics do little justice for the colors of these two pieces. They were the softest hues of pink and blue.

Old Friends

Once again, I'll be out of town this weekend. My cousin and I are going to visit some fabulous old friends who now live in Dothan, AL. The last time I've seen them was when I was a high schooler. Scary. Aside from excitement to see them, I am also excited about the Highlands Flea Market in Dothan! My fingers are crossed for some shabby chic finds...

To Go Green or Not Go Green

This evening, TLC aired a Jon and Kate marathon. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen an episode, I can watch it again and again and again. Kinda like The Hills (sad, but true). David says I should apply to be their nanny-- Jon and Kate's, not LC and Audrina's.

Anyway, one of the J&K episodes featured Sara Snow.
They kept talking about Sara Snow this and Sara Snow that and how exciting it was to have her in their home. After Googling her, I found out that Sara Snow is a "Green Living Expert." On her blog, she answers the Paper vs. Plastic debate. Answer: neither. Bring your own reusable bag. The Cliff Notes explanation is here.

I'm not sure if it was my time in France where no one likes to waste anything, especially not my host parents, the en vogue-ness of going green or the media infiltration of green-ness, but something has recently clicked. I am diligently trying to get my hands on a curbside recycling bin, but it
seems the state of Alabama or Jefferson County likes to keep these locked up and hidden. It is true what they say! Alabama is a slow movin' state. So desperate, I have even contemplated snatching a neighbor's. Don't be surprised if yours comes up a-missin.

So, tonight, as I wait for David to finish his law studies, I am iShopping for a stylish, reusable grocery bag. Tree-hugger chic, if you will. Reusable Bags offers a plethora of green bags. I'm a huge fan of 'ol Betty:

Isn't she cute? She is made by b.happybags. I'm going to shop around. Something green in pink would be lovely.

Okay, gotta go. David just uttered the words: Come over here and watch Jon and Kate with me. Can't pass up that chance.

Note to Self

Love, love, love these greeting cards! Who doesn't love receiving a pretty note via snail mail? Call me an old-fashioned romantic, but I love the idea of handwritten notes! Below, are the ones I really fancy at Luxe Paperie. The pink chairs has to be mon favourite! The only problem with these couture cards is sending them. How ever shall I part with them?

The Bee that Gets the Honey...

This past weekend, I helped my Mom paint her booth at this antique mall in our hometown. We went to the Thrift Store in search of items to stock her booth. This is what she found:

It says: The bee that gets the honey doesn't hang around the hive. We both loved it so much, she couldn't possibly put it in the booth. So, she gave it to moi. I couldn't believe she was willing to part with it.

That's the thing with these booths. How do people buy things they like enough to put in the booth without wanting it for themselves? Guess that's the only child in me. At least I admit it though, right?

Jon & Kate Plus 8

A.K.A. my favorite show. Nine minutes to go until a new episode of Jon and Kate Plus Eight comes on and I'm beside myself. I have been a fan for a few months now and find these eight little munchkins irresistible despite the incessant crying and whining that comes naturally with this many children. As an only child, I like to live through this show vicariously, I suppose. I also secretly like to watch it to see what my little Asian babies may one day (far from now) look like.

If you have yet to enjoy the wonderfulness of this show, do so immediately! If not for the sheer entertainment value of watching two parents raise eight kids, then to see what my Asian babies may one day (far from now) look like. You can't help but fall in love.

Martha Stewart Flowers

After weeks of waiting, Martha Stewart Flowers is up and running again. Yea! She has joined 1-800 Flowers to streamline her flower business. Boo!

What I most loved about Martha Stewart Flowers was 1.) the flowers arrive in a pretty Martha box 2.) the clean presentation style, which involved little greenery, single color, tightly grouped flowers and 3.) the reasonable prices. Now, the presentation style has changed and the prices are higher. Before, she had a beautiful and quite fragrant, I must add, pink oriental lily bouquet. I thought this little arrangement made a perfect "Just Because" or "Happy Birthday" gift at a nice $29.95. But now, they are a whopping $69.95. For lilies. Sacrilege!

Before, Martha also offered several $30 and under options. Value plus quality, always a great combo. And now, they offer only one $40 and under option, which translates to this:

...a mixed purple bouquet of carnations.

My how times have changed. Don't get me wrong, I think single color, tightly grouped carnations can be arranged to look surprisingly chic. Martha herself happens to love carnations presented as such. But this, quel horreur! Martha and I are going to have a little tete-a-tete.

A few bouquets I like, sans price consideration:

Mini Calla Lily Bouquet with Matte Silvered Vase $84.95

Vibrant Ranunculus Bouquet in Silver Julep Cup $64.95

Take a look around at 1800 Flowers and save $10 on MS Flowers when you use Promotion Code: MARTHA1 at checkout.

Shoes to Choose

Stepping Stone Thongs from Anthropologie

Navajo in Gold by Jack Rogers

Last time I purchased casual flat sandals was Spring 2005 while I was traveling through Capri, Italy. What a terribly long time frame! Although, I do love that Capri is etched into my sole. The cobbler only had to utter, "Jackie Kennedy loved these," before I was counting out my Euros. (He probably saw me as an easy target. Either way I'm satisfied.)

But, summer is just around the corner + there is room in my closet = shoe shopping. I like both of these, mainly for their thong style. The Jack Rogers hold in more of your foot, which is a good thing. I hate floppy sandals. However, the decorative turquoise stones are quite appealing as well. ....the decisions a girl must make!
